announces the

VIII° INTERNATIONAL CONTEST FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF MODERN MUSIC - THE ROME AWARD
19th - 26th November 2006



open to Italian and foreign musicians who are under 35 years of age on the date their applications is made. As regards ensembles, this age limit is to be understood as the average age of the group as whole.
1) The Competition is open to soloists (execpt for the Organ) as well as chamber ensembles of up to a maximum of five players, even if they have already participated in previous years.
2) The participants are to present a programme that lasts between 30 and 40 minutes (only 10 minutes for opera singers) and that includes:
a) one or more pieces composed between 1901-1950;
b) one or more pieces composed between 1951 and present day.
3) The contenders who have participated to previous editions must introduce a various program are for the section a) that for the section b).
4) There will be a special contest for the best original unpublished work by an Italian composer partecipating in the main competition.
5) As far as the dating of the pieces is concerned, the act of filing them with the Authors’ and Publishers’ Associations in their respective countries will be deemed authoritative, unless they have already been included in publishers’ indices.
6) The pieces do not necessarily have to be played by heart but, if they are, the performer will be awarded 1 (one) extra point which will be added to the assessment made by the Judges’ Panel.
7) A copy of all the published or unpublished works that are to be performed must be made available to the judges at the moment of competing. Photocopies will only be accepted in the case of works that have not yet been published.
8) The panel’s decision is final and decisive.
9) The Judges’ Panel will be made up of:

10) Whorever:
is a relative of or has some other affinity with one or more of the
competitors, or; has had a private teaching relationship with one or more of the
competitors during the two years immediately preceding the competition’s opening date cannot be on the Judges’ Panel.
Members of the Panel who have had a public teaching relationship with one or more of the competitors during the two years immediately preceding the competition’s opening date must abstain from voting in relation to that particular competitor.
11) The Panel is allowed to interrupt the performance if it lasts longer than the 40 minutes permitted.
12) All competitors who have achieved marks of over 90/100 will be admitted to the finals. During the course of the finals, the competitors will have to perform either programme A or programme B, or only a part of one of them, at the Judges’ request. The names of the winners of the scholarships and any special prizes will be announced at the end of the finals. The scholarships amount to €. 2.500,00 (two thousand five hundred/00) Euro each, whilst the special prizes amount to €. 500,00 (five hundred/00) Euro each. These sums are subject to tax deductions required by law. The winners will, furthemore, be recommended to the attention of the Artistic Managers of Opera and Symphony Foundations as well as Concert Istitutions. The scolarship have been made available by I.M.A.I.E. - the Italian Istitute for the Protection of Artists’, Interpreters’ and Performers’ Rights, by the S.I.A.E. - the Italian Authors’ and Publishers’ Association, by the Municipality of Roma and the Accademia dei Concordi.
13) The winners must take part in the gala concert and the prize-giving ceremony; failure to do so will lead to the prizes being annulled. The contest organizers reserve the right to film, record and/or broadcast all the competition’s different stages on radio and television and the competitors cannot claim the right to any fee or to exercise any veto.
14) The prize-giving concert will take place on the first praticable day after the finals have been concluded.
15) Applicants have the right to partecipate with more than one ensemble provided that they pay the relevant application fees. The said fees, toghether with the programme, application, a curriculum vitae and a passport-sized photograph must reach the Competition Secretary’s Office by 15 November 2006. Furthemore, in compliance with the provisions of section 9 of the present competition notice, competitors must declare in their admission application whether or not they fall into one of the categories it envisages.
16) The application fees are subdivided as follows:
Original composition by an italian composer €. 50,00 (Fifty/00)
Solista........................ €. 50,00 (Fifty/00)
Duo............................ €. 100,00 (One hundred/00)
Trio............................ €. 150,00 (One hundred and fifty/00)
Quartetto.................... €. 200,00 (Two hundred/00)
Quintetto.................... €. 250,00 (Two hundred and fifty/00)
17) The act of partecipating in the competition consitutes a tacit acceptance of the above rules. In the case of controversy, the only text of the competition notice, that is legally binding is the original Italian text. Any disputes arising in relation to the present competition of the Court of Rome.
18) Candidates must telephone the Competition Secretary’s Office between 16 and 18 November 2006 so as to know the day and time that they are to compete.
