announces the
1st EDITION OF THE PIETRO MASCAGNI
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
FOR OPERA SINGERS
CITY OF ROME PRIZE
16 - 19 May 2011
The competition will be held in Rome at the Accademia
di Romania
(Valle Giulia Piazza José de San Martin, from 16 to 19 May 2011).
1) Participation is open
to male and female singers of any nationality who are under 37 years
of age at the time of their application.
2) Participants must present their applications no later
than 15 May 2011 via e-mail, to the following email address: info[at]accademiaconcordi.it
3) Participants must present five pieces of their choice
from the traditional opera repertoire.
4) All Arias must be performed by memory, complete with recitatives
and cabalettas, where applicable.
5) All pieces presented must be sung in the original key
and language.
6) Participants will be accompanied on the piano by pianists
provided by the competition organizers. Participants may also choose
to be accompanied by a pianist of their own choice, and must assume
all related expenses and responsibilities.
7) Participants must use their own sheet music.
8) In the Preliminary phase, participants must perform two
arias among those in their presented programme, to be selected by
the candidate.
9) All participants who have been deemed suitable according
to the indisputable judgment of the commission will advance to the
Semifinals. In the Semifinal phase, participants will be asked to
perform one or more arias, chosen by the Judging Commission, among
those in the candidate's presented programme.
10) During the Preliminary phase and Semifinals, the Judging
Commission may, at its discretion, interrupt the candidate's performance
at any moment, ask to hear from participants more than once and/or
hear only one of the arias included in the programme.
11) The Preliminary and Semifinal phases will be closed door
events. The Finals will be held in a concert open to the public,
in the manner described in point 12, below.
12) All participants deemed suitable by the indisputable
judgment of the Commission shall be admitted to the Finals. The
Finals will be held in a public concert on 14 May 2011 at Teatro
Accademia di Romania at 6pm. All participants admitted to this phase
of the competition must perform an aria selected by the Judging
Commission; the commission will announce the names of the winners
at the end of the performance.
13) Winners will be awarded the following prizes:
1st Prize € 2,000.00
2nd Prize € 1,000.00
3rd Prize € 500.00
The "Pietro Mascagni" Special Prize of € 1,000.00
will be awarded for the best execution of an aria from the works
of Mascagni.
Special prize of Euro 1.000,00 for the young singers who have not
exceeded 27 years of age at the time of registration.
14) The commission may, at its discretion, call a tie (awarding
the prize to two worthy candidates) or not assign any prize at all
should none of the participants be deemed to meet the necessary
artistic requirements.
15) The winners may be called to perform in operas and concerts
organized by the Accademia dei Concordi in Rome in collaboration
with Arts & Culture of Seoul.
16) The Judging Commission shall be comprised of five members,
exponents from the world of international music. The president of
the commission shall be Maestro Stefano Trasimeni (Principal Director
of the Seoul Philharmonic). www.stefanotrasimeni.it.
The definitive composition of the commission will be rendered public
before the competition begins.
17) At the beginning of the competition, each member of the
Judging Commission will provide a declaration stating the absence
of any relationship of kinship with any of the participants.
Members of the Judging Commission who have or have had a public
or private teaching relationship with any of the participants in
the two years preceding the competition will abstain from the vote.
This abstention will be recorded in the final competition report.
18) The president of the Judging Commission, may, at any
time, call new members to the Jury should overwhelming circumstances
prevent the established members from attending.
19) The decisions of the Judging Commission are indisputable
and final.
20) Opinions expressed by the Judging Commission during the
Preliminary phases will be limited to "admission" or "non-admission"
to the next phase.
21) At the end of each Preliminary phase, the Judging Commission
will report its decisions. All participants who have been "admitted"
will participate in the Semifinal.
22) Participants who receive a score of no less than 80/100
in the Semifinal phase will be admitted to the Finals.
23) All participants admitted to the Finals will receive
a Diploma of Merit from the Accademia, signed by the Judging Commission.
24) During the Final phase of the competition (as in the
Semifinals), the opinions of the Judging Commission shall be expressed
in a mathematical score, the result of which, shall be the average
of the votes given by the individual jury members, excluding the
highest and lowest scores.
25) The Final Phase will be open to the public.
26) The competition will be held in Rome at the Accademia
di Romania, according to the following schedule:
16 May - Preliminary phase
17 May - Preliminary phase
18 May - Semifinals
19 May - Finals
27) All winners of analogous international competitions may
be addmitted directly to the Semifinals. To this end, these candidates
must attach their previous titles won to the application, which
will be evaluated on 14 May by the Judging Commission before the
competition. All participants who have been accepted directly to
the Semifinal phase are responsible for verifying the date and order
of their auditions on the website, www.accademiaconcordi.it.
28) The performance order in the Preliminary phase will be
established by drawing lots on 15 May, and will be maintained for
the remainder of the Preliminary phase. Participants are responsible
for visiting the website, www.accademiaconcordi.it to receive information
about the date and order of their audition. Please note that it
is the responsibility of the participant, after having read the
date and order of the elimination phase, to arrive at the audition
without reminder from competition organizers; participants must
bring valid identification document and the sheet music of the chosen
pieces.
29) Performance order for the Semifinals and Finals will
be established by the Judging Commission.
30) Winners are obliged, under pain of revocation of their
prize, to participate in the gala concert and the award ceremony.
The organization reserves the right to film, record and broadcast
via radio and television the various phases of the competition and
participants may request no royalties nor place any restrictions.
31) The awards ceremony will be held in a concert on Saturday
19 May 2011 at 6pm, at the Accademia di Romania.
32) Participants shall not be reimbursed for expenses or
travel costs.
33) All prizes are subject to legal taxes. Prizes will be
paid directly at the awards ceremony.
34) Payment of the registration fee of €120.00 (One
hundred and twenty/00), of which € 20.00 is for processing
fees and €100.00 constitutes the registration fee, must be
received by the competition administration office, even telematically,
by 15 May 2011. In addition to a copy of a document attesting to
birthdate, nationality and residence, the participant must also
include the programme, copies of sheet music, an artistic-professional
Curriculum Vitae in Italian or English and two photos (at least
one of which in artistic pose) with the application. Moreover, participants,
with respect to point 17 of this announcement, must declare in the
application that they meet the conditions described therein. Material
accompanying the application will not be returned.
35) Incomplete applications or those without proof of payment
of the registration fee will not be taken into consideration.
36) Registration in the competition means that the participant
fully accepts the points contained in this announcement, and concedes
authorization of the use of biographic data, according to legislative
decree n. 196 of 30/06/2003 as well as unqualified release for the
use of audio-visual and documentary footage taken during the various
phases of the competition to the Accademia dei Concordi of Rome.
In accordance with the above-mentioned legislative decree, the data
collected will be used by the Accademia, in electronic and paper
form, for the sole purpose of the management of the competition.
37) Participants admitted to the competition who do not appear
on the day of the convocation are not entitled to reimbursement
of the registration fee.
38) Processing fees are absolutely non-refundable.
39) If, for force majeure, the Competition should not take
place, all enrollments shall be annulled and all fees reimbursed.
40) Participation in the competition is equal to tacit acceptance
of these regulations. To contest the content of these regulations,
the only legally valid version is in the Italian language original.
The Tribunal of Rome has exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes
related to this competition announcement.
41) Participants must verify the day and time of their examination
on the Accademia website: www.accademiaconcordi.it
42) All finalists and prize winners are obliged to insert
the acknowledgements from their participation in the Pietro Mascagni
International Competition in their artistic Curriculum Vitae.
43) At the conclusion of the competition, all the various
phases will be published on the Accademia's website.
